A court in Abuja has authorized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State. The warrant was granted by Justice Emeka Nwite on Wednesday at the request of the EFCC. The arrest is in preparation for Bello’s arraignment, which is scheduled for Thursday.
Earlier today, a Kogi state High Court in Lokoja issued an order restraining the EFCC from arresting, detaining, or prosecuting former governor Yahaya Bello. Justice I.A Jamil delivered the two-hour judgment in suit no HCL/68/M/2020 in Lokoja. The judge held that infringing on the fundamental human rights of Yahaya Bello is null and void except as authorized by the Court.
“The EFCC is hereby restrained from arresting, detaining and prosecuting the applicant. This is a definite order following the earlier interim injunction given, ” he said. Bello had filed a case of a breach of his fundamental human rights by the Anti-graft agency before the state High Court. The former governor had prayed for an order restraining the EFCC from arresting, detaining, and prosecuting him unjustly. Bello sought the enforcement of his fundamental right against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
