The military coup in the Niger Republic was forcibly advised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) not to bring charges against Mohamed Bazoum, the country’s lawfully elected president.
According to a previous report by Naija News, the military coup leaders pledged to charge President Bazoum with treason and damaging the nation’s internal and exterior security.
ECOWAS, however, referred to the coup leaders’ plot as a provocation in response to their declaration.
The West African bloc insisted that ECOWAS and the international world continue to recognize President Bazoum.
The ECOWAS Organization demanded the ousted President’s quick release and reinstatement and denounced his ongoing arrest.
“ECOWAS has learned with stupefaction attempts to bring charges of high treason against H.E. Mohamed BAZOUM, President of the Republic of Niger,” reads the statement posted by ECOWAS on Twitter. This action is condemned by ECOWAS since it amounts to yet another act of provocation and goes against reports that the military authorities in the Republic of Niger are eager to use peaceful measures to reestablish constitutional order.
