Bodies of Ebola victims are lying abandoned in the streets of Sierra Leone’s capital it has emerged, as burial teams strike over a backlog in ‘hazard’ pay.
Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation reported that bodies of Ebola victims were being left in homes and on the streets of Freetown because of the strike by burial teams, who complained they had not been paid.
A spokesman for the country’s health ministry, described the situation to The Associated Press as “very embarrassing” , he however, insisted that money was available to pay the crews.
Deputy health minister Madina Rahman said “the health ministry is going to investigate the delay in the health workers not receiving their money,” Rahman said.
Tunis said the burial teams make up a total of 600 workers organized in groups of 12.
