Ayra Starr, a celebrated vocalist from Nigeria, has disclosed that her contract with Mavin Records was signed by Don Jazzy in just three days.
The “Sabi” singer spoke about how she secured a record deal with Mavin Records after doing a cover song on social media.
Ayra Starr revealed that her mother encouraged her to do song covers, which changed her focus from modeling to music.
Initially, the talented artist wanted to pursue modeling despite people telling her that she wasn’t tall enough for the industry. However, she defied the odds and succeeded in modeling. Looking back, she is proud of her younger self and attributes her success to the 16-year-old girl who never gave up.
She used to do cover songs on Instagram, and her mother and her friends would compel her to keep doing them. One day, she uploaded a cover on Instagram, which she didn’t even like. However, she felt an unexplained urge to post it and did just that. Within six hours, Don Jazzy reached out to her, and within three days, she was signed to Mavin Records.
She added;“I’m an artiste to the core, and I want my style, my hair, my music, to represent how I feel. I don’t care about aesthetics, it’s more about how I feel. I’m not bothered about the male, or female gaze, or anybody’s gaze for that matter, except my own.
I’ve always had a mind of my own. Growing up in different places, in different cultures, has shaped my mind. And despite all these influences, I’m still myself. I wrote “Asé” when I was 15 — I had no business writing that song. So that gives you a glimpse of the kind of mindset I had at a young age.”
