Delta State Governor, Sherriff Oborevwori, has announced a reduction in tuition fees at state universities to enhance access to education for youth.
The governor made this announcement on Thursday at the opening of the 18th Nigerian Red Cross Society International Youth Camp, held at the Federal Road Safety Corps Training School in Agbor, Delta State. He was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Harry Trakiriowei.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting youth through education.
“Here in Delta State, we recognise the important role that education plays in shaping the youth to make an enduring impact in the world. This is why as soon as I took office as Governor of Delta State, I ordered state-owned universities and other tertiary institutions to lower the fees that they charge students,” he said.
Last September, Oborevwori approved a 25% reduction in acceptance fees for students at the four state-owned universities as part of measures to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on residents. This decision was communicated by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, in Asaba.
At the event, FRSC Training School Commandant Oludare Ogunjobi highlighted the long-standing partnership between the Red Cross and the traffic agency. Nigerian Red Cross Society National President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga praised the youth participants for their dedication and the vital role they play in humanitarian efforts in Nigeria. He also thanked National Youth Adviser Sidney Osawaru for organizing the camp to international standards and acknowledged the support from NRCS branches across the country, with participants traveling from states such as Zamfara, Borno, Rivers, Lagos, and Kano.
