Political activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has emotionally thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support following his release from Ekiti prison.
Farotimi was detained over defamation allegations by renowned lawyer Afe Babalola, tied to his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which critiques flaws in the nation’s legal structure.
Speaking days after securing a ₦50 million bail, Farotimi expressed deep gratitude for the solidarity shown by Nigerians, emphasizing the strength of unity beyond ethnic and religious lines.
“We lost our humanity when we became Nigerians, divided by labels. But because you saw me as more than a Yoruba man or a Christian, you stood for me,” he tearfully remarked.
Farotimi credited this collective action for his freedom, stating, “Because you spoke, Nigeria couldn’t silence me. Together, your voices made a difference.”
The video of his heartfelt speech has since gone viral, sparking widespread praise and reigniting conversations about freedom of speech, systemic injustices, and the power of collective activism in Nigeria.
Farotimi’s ordeal has become a rallying point for addressing inequalities and fostering national unity, with many lauding his advocacy for justice and societal change.
Dele Farotimi was in tears earlier this morning narrating how the collective voice of Nigerians who spoke up for him saved his life. This video is too emotional 💔
