The European Union (EU) has expressed grief over the lynching of Nigerian citizen, Deborah Samuel in Sokoto State.

The life of the Shehu Shagari College of Education student was violently cut short by a mob last Thursday.

The EU urged the Nigerian authorities to ensure that the perpetrators were prosecuted.

Reacting on Wednesday, the 27-member union demanded that justice is done.

“Still saddened by last week’s gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto.

“Everything must be done to ensure the murderers are not only swiftly brought to justice, but that justice is done. Reoccurrence must also be prevented,” a statement on Twitter reads.

Vocal lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa had condemned the “watery charges” filed against the two suspects arrested over Deborah killing.

The charges “against hardened murderers is an insult to the parents of the deceased, the people of Nigeria and God who created Deborah”, said the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

However, the EU has charged the youths to go beyond obtaining their voter’s card and actively participate in the 2023 general elections.

The body insists it is only by doing this that young Nigerians can influence who rules over them for another four years.

The Head of the EU delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Ambassador Samuela Isopi made the call.

Isopi described the 2023 polls as an opportunity for young people to be part of the decision making process.

The diplomat charged them to determine political office and also put themselves up for election.

“Now is the time for youths to influence the outcome of the 2023 elections for their benefits and their country at large.

“Today is the tomorrow our leaders have always spoken about, when we say that youths are the future of tomorrow”, Isopi said.
