The convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige came under attack on Thursday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North LGA.
Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, revealed that the ex-governor was not traveling with the convoy when the incident happened.
During the assault, gunmen believed to be disguised in police and military uniforms shot a police officer in the lead vehicle and stole both his weapon and uniform.
A tragic turn occurred when a woman filming the scene on her phone was shot and killed by the attackers.
A nearby shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also hit by gunfire. Although he lost a lot of blood, he is expected to undergo surgery to remove the bullets and is said to be stable, with doctors anticipating a full recovery. The pilot vehicle suffered extensive bullet damage.
Authorities confirmed that no police officers died in the incident. The escort team leader who was injured has undergone surgery and is expected to recover. The shop owner was also lucky, as none of the bullets affected his spine.
Chukwuelobe stated, “I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured.
“He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”
As of now, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued an official report on the attack.
