De Bruyne and Lukaku bagged one goal each to help Belgium book the last quarter finals slot.
Two goals in the first additional period were
enough to dispatch a brave challenge from the
Americans, who got one back through Green to
set up a nervy end to the match.
Belgium booked a World
Cup quarter-final date
with Argentina as they
saw off the USA 2-1
after extra time.
Although Marc Wilmot’s side dominated much
of the game, they had to wait until the second
minute of the first additional period to make
the breakthrough as Kevin De Bruyne struck
with their 31st shot of the game. Shortly
afterwards, Romelu Lukaku capped a fine
break with an emphatic finish.
Julian Green shot past Thibaut Courtois shortly
after the half time in extra time, but despite an interesting end, USA were unable to score another goal to level things up.
