Afrobeats icon David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has stirred discussions about Nigeria’s political system, asserting that the country lacks genuine democracy.
During a recent appearance on The Morning Hustle podcast, Davido compared Nigeria’s governance to that of the United States, expressing his admiration for the U.S.’s democratic structure.
The singer revealed that while he voted for Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party during the U.S. elections, he still extended his congratulations to Donald Trump upon his victory.
“I congratulated Donald Trump. That’s the president! What are you talking about? Even if I ran against him, I’d still congratulate him,” Davido explained.
He also praised the democratic process in the U.S., contrasting it with his experiences in Nigeria. “What I like about America is that there’s true democracy. Where I come from [Nigeria], it’s not the same,” he added.
The Unavailable hitmaker shared his motivation for supporting Kamala Harris, saying, “To be honest, I voted for Kamala Harris because I wanted to witness the first female president in my generation. That would have been amazing.”
Davido’s comments have sparked lively debates online, with fans and political analysts weighing in on his perspective on democracy and Nigeria’s political framework.
