Arsenal have allowed David Beckham to train with them to maintain his fitness ahead of his next move, although Arsene Wenger has played down talk the former England captain could sign for the Gunners.

The midfielder, 37, has previously worked out with the Gunners during the MLS off-season, but now that he’s a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy, speculation mounted Wenger could have been tempted to offer the superstar a permanent deal.

Beckham has struck an agreement to train at Arsenal’s state-of-the-art London Colney HQ for the time being, and was at training on Wednesday morning.

Wenger has never hidden his admiration for Beckham’s attitude and work-rate, and with the Gunners in desperate need of galvanising, the former Manchester United man could be seen as the ideal signing to jump-start their season.

However, the Frenchman has dampened speculation that he is considering offering the star a contract.

He said: ‘Beckham called me and asked to train here. It’s purely for fitness. No question of signing.’

QPR, West Ham, Paris Saint Germain and AC Milan have all been linked with the veteran midfielder, but a stay in London looks increasingly likely for the Beckham family.

The 37-year-old has previously conceded he would find it difficult to play for another Premier League club after spending 10 glorious years at Old Trafford, but a chance to stay at the top level in England could appeal to the world’s most famous footballer.
