Nigerian actor Daniel Etim-Effiong, in a discussion on the Bad and Boujee podcast with hosts TolaniBaj and Moet Abebe, sheds light on why more male actors resort to seeking financial assistance online compared to their female counterparts. He attributes this trend to the patriarchal norms in Nigeria, where men are considered responsible for women. According to Etim-Effiong, men feel compelled to act when women face challenges.
Using himself as an example, the actor explains that when he receives payment for a job, his instinct is to prioritize taking care of his family, settling bills, and maintaining the household. In contrast, he suggests that women often view their earnings as personal enjoyment, enabling them to save more.
Etim-Effiong further elaborates on societal dynamics, highlighting how women, seen as beautiful creatures, receive gifts and financial rewards from admirers, contributing to their financial well-being. In contrast, men typically shoulder the responsibility of providing for themselves, leading them to seek public assistance when they encounter financial difficulties. He emphasizes that men are generally hesitant to ask women for help, as women are perceived to be less likely to solve men’s problems.
