Fashion is dynamic as well as universal. Nigerians are getting in on the scene and currently, there are certain fashion trends common to Nigerians right now. I’ve made a few observations over the past few months and I will now present you with my findings.
1. The Ankara phase.
African wax or Ankara has always been native to Nigeria and the whole continent as a whole. For decades, Nigerians have used ankara to make dresses, skirts and iro (wrappers). More recently, we have seen women wearing ankara jackets and even trousers. More European-styled outfits such as evening gowns, skater skirts and even jumpsuits have also been made from this material. Jewelry and accessories have not been left out in this trend, as people have made ear-rings, bangles, bags and shoes from ankara. Tell us, how have you bought into the ankara trend?
2. Iro and Buba.
Like I said, fashion is dynamic. The iro (wrapper) and buba (blouse) have been around for ages, but were mainly worn by the older Yoruba woman. This outfit was also generally made of lace or more common materials.
This style evolved gradually into what is known as the Oleku; a shorter iro and a short-sleeved buba, majorly made out of the ankara material.
A new twist was added to this outfit, and soon the younger generation picked up the iro and buba style, putting it on in either silk, chiffon or satin. Giving ladies a fresh, elegant, and chic look; it came as no surprise when literally everyone was spotted in the outfit. Even Kelly Rowland rocked an iro and buba twist when she visited Nigeria.
Now, ladies are still using the silk and chiffon materials in various patterns, but are going back to the conventional way of tying the wrapper.
3. Denim Fever
It’s everywhere, and not just in trousers, but also in skirts, face caps, sneakers, belts, jackets and even patched on items of clothing. How have you caught the denim fever?
I am particularly in love with distressed skinny jeans. Worn the right way, they make anyone look sexy and edgy; and they totally change up an outfit. Just keep them away from the office.
4. Colour Blocked Sandals
This is not for the faint-hearted. Some of these really chic sandals come without platforms, so they require a lot of confidence to rock without looking like a cripple. I recommend that you look for those with a platform and chunky heels, to give them more use and comfort.
