Nigeria has won her first medal in weightlifting at the ongoing 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Nigerian lifter Nkechi Opara won the bronze medal in the Women’s 48kg category, on Thursday, to set the tone for Nigeria at the event.

Opara scored 70 in snatch, 92 in clean and jerk for total 162 points to come behind Indian duo Sanjita Chanu, who won the gold with 173 points, and Saikhom Mirabai, winning silver with 170 points.

The women’s 48 kg event was one of two in the weightlifting competition, which was one of many on the first day of competition at the game.

In other news, Nigeria’s female team to the Commonwealth Games on Thursday beat their Kenyan counterparts in the first Table Tennis action in the games.

The team led by Funke Oshonaike beat their fellow Africans, Kenya, 3-0 to keep the chase on between them and India in Pool D; Ghana and fellow Africans, Tanzanian lot to their counterparts from England and Trinidad & Tobago on 3-0 scorelines.

In the Men category, Nigeria beat Bangladesh 3-0 in Pool D.
