Renowned Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, has shared how he forgave his father, Afro-juju legend Shina Peters, even before speaking with him after coming to terms with the fact that he had unknowingly followed in his father’s footsteps.
In a candid conversation on the Afropolitan podcast, Clarence reflected on a turning point in 2014/2015, which he describes as the moment he truly stepped into adulthood. According to him, he made every mistake his father did, but was fortunate to have time and technology on his side, preventing the outcomes from being as damaging.
“I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own. So, the moment I realised that I forgave him instantly even before we had a conversation. That would be 2014/15. That was when I became an adult. That was when I began my journey into adulthood. I’m still on the journey. You’re always on the journey,” he said.
The 41-year-old filmmaker, son of music icon Shina Peters and veteran actress Clarion Chukwura, has previously opened up about his upbringing. He once revealed that his mother nearly aborted him but reconsidered, believing he was the reincarnation of her late father.
In a separate interview with Chude Jideonwo earlier in 2025, Clarence admitted he struggled with judging his father’s treatment of his mother and acknowledged his own imperfections in relationships.
“I would have loved to judge my dad for how he treated my mother but I’m not in a position to,” he said. “I tried not to be like my father with women, but I’m not perfect.”
