Atletico Madrid will face city rivals, Real Madrid, in the final of the UEFA Champions League after recording a 3-1 aggregate win over Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge. A second-half penalty from Atletico’s top scorer, Diego Costa made it a miserable night for the Chelsea faithful, who were harbouring high hopes of witnessing another magical Champions League final night. Much had been made of Mourinho’s ultra-defensive display against Liverpool at the weekend, but the Blues left enough openings for Diego Simeone’s side to exploit. It was the hosts, though, who took the lead on 36 minutes, when Willian, who had caused Atletico problems with his set-pieces, twisted past two defenders, leaving Cesar Azpilicueta to drive a ball into the path of Fernando Torres, who stroked home via a slight deflection. Mourinho’s side conceded a soft equaliser two minutes before the interval. Tiago stood up a cross at the far post, and Juanfran pulled it back across for the oncoming Adrian Lopez, who drove into an empty net. Samuel Eto’o was the villain of the tie just before the hour mark, when he unintentionally felled Costa in the area. After a slight delay pontificating over the exact positioning of the penalty and receiving a yellow card for his efforts, Costa held his nerve to blast the spot kick into the roof of the net. Atletico made sure of the result 18 minutes from the end, Arda Turan striking the bar but pouncing to follow up his effort with a neat tap-in. The result means Mourinho — despite holding the record for most Champions League semi-final appearances (eight) — has lost his fourth semi-final in a row, but Atletico will now meet nine-times champions and bitter city rivals, Real Madrid in the final in Lisbon on May 24, 2014.
