Manchester United’s striker Robin van Persie has revealed how much he covets the UEFA Champions League trophy as he has declared that the piece of silverware literally means the world to him.
The Dutch international told Champions Matchday – the official UEFA Champions League magazine – that he has his eyes fixed on winning Europe’s biggest club prize and would give the course all he has got.
“It would mean the world to me,” said Van Persie, who has scored 24 UEFA Champions League goals in 65 competition appearances.
“Of course it’s a trophy many players don’t win; [you win it] once, if you’re very lucky. You have a couple of players who’ve won it more than once but it’s a very special trophy everyone wants to win every year.
“Only one team can win it, and it’s very hard. It seems to get harder every year to win it, because the teams are getting better and better. So it’s always hard if you want something everyone wants.
The road to the finals in Lisbon is a bit far-off as RVP and his teammates have to first navigate their way from the Round of 16 to the quarters and then semis.
The closest RVP has been to lifting the Champions League trophy was in 2006 when he was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s loss to Barcelona, but the Dutch goal poacher stays positive that it could be his time this year even though several pundits think otherwise.
