CBN recovers N6bn excess Bank Charges on customers money in one year

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it has so far recovered N6 billion in excess bank charges in the last one year.

The CBN Governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, who disclosed this at the EFinA Innovation Forum in Lagos yesterday, said the recovery was part of the apex bank’s decision to strengthen consumer protection, stressing that to achieve financial inclusion, bank customers must be protected from excess charges.

He implored banks to invest in structure, policies to enhance consumers’ protection, stating that complaints from customers must be handled in a timely manner.

Sanusi further disclosed that the CBN was partnering with the Ministry of Communication Tchnology on digital inclusion, stating that under the arrangement, the apex bank would use the NIPOST facilities.

“We had a strategic meeting with the Minister of Communication recently. We are looking for ways to access NIPOST for digital inclusion. We are optimistic that it will work and further promote financial inclusion in the country,” he said.
