A deadly ambush by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants has reportedly claimed the lives of several soldiers and Civilian JTF members in Borno State, with a serving Brigadier-General said to have been taken captive during the assault.
Late-Night Strike on Army Convoy
The attack was said to have occurred on Friday night along a route in the northeast.
According to early reports, the insurgents armed and highly organized launched a sudden assault on a Nigerian Army convoy, overpowering the troops and causing major losses.
Witnesses believe the ambush was carefully planned, giving the soldiers almost no chance to mount a defense before the attackers seized control of the area.
Top Military Officer Allegedly Abducted
In a shocking twist, the fighters reportedly captured a Brigade Commander along with other personnel during the operation.
If verified, this would mark the first time an extremist group in the country has successfully kidnapped a serving General directly from an active combat mission.
HumAngle’s report stated:
“ISWAP fighters last night ambushed a Nigerian military convoy, killing several soldiers and members of the CJTF. In an unprecedented escalation, the insurgents abducted a Brigade Commander alongside other troops.”
Army Yet to Release Official Statement
As of Saturday morning, the Nigerian Army has not made any public comments regarding the ambush or the status of the missing officer.
