According to Daily Trust, some Boko Haram terrorists have relocated to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where they are now disguised as menial workers.
The operation came after heavy bombardment by security forces in the north-east and north-west.
The newspaper cited a security source who was responding to the US Mission in Nigeria’s security advisory.
The US Embassy in Nigeria issued a travel warning to Americans in Nigeria on Sunday, citing an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Nigeria, particularly in Abuja.
“There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja. Targets may include, but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organisations.
“The U.S. Embassy will offer reduced services until further notice. Actions to Take: Avoid all non-essential travel or movement. Stay alert. Avoid crowds,” the advisory read.
The news had reawakened residents’ fear in the nation’s capital. Terrorists overran the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja months ago, freeing 800 inmates, including all Boko Haram suspects in detention.
Following that, troops from the Presidential Guards Brigade were ambushed within the nation’s capital. Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were concerned, but they eventually moved on with their lives.
However, the situation became concerning following the recent US advisory.
However, security sources said they were aware that some ISWAP commanders and foot soldiers had assimilated into the civilian population in and around Abuja, perfecting plans for simultaneous attacks.
According to sources, most embassies in Nigeria were aware of this, and thus the announcement by the US Embassy could simply be one of such advisories, as others must have quietly warned their citizens to be on the lookout.
“We have gone far in securing not only the FCT but Nigeria at large. The terrorists have no hiding place anymore because we are tracking and picking them. We know all their antics. “Many of them are working as mechanics, tailors, carpenters, labourers and even experts in some fields. We know what is happening.”
The Department of State Services (DSS) had allayed Nigerians’ fears, particularly those in the country’s capital.
