The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has recovered a body believed to be that of 40-year old Mr Oluseyi Adekunle, who allegedly jumped off the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge into the Lagos lagoon, on Friday.

The body which was said to have been found floating by the river bank around the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge, was discovered by a local fisherman on Sunday morning at about 5.00am, after which the attention of the rescue agencies was called.

The body was recovered from the lagoon by coordinated efforts of officials of the LASEMA, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Marine Police and handed over to the State Environmental Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

The body has been taken to the Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary for deposition.

Mr Adekunle who according to eyewitnesses, appeared to be on his way to work on the fateful day, was said to have dropped his bag at the rails before taking the plunge in an apparent suicide bid.

His ATM card and other items were recovered from the scene of the incident, thereby revealing his identity.

The authorities are, however, still investigating the cause of Adekunle’s action.

This incident comes barely six months after a medical doctor identified as Allwell Orji jumped to his death from the third mainland bridge into the lagoon.

In a joint press conference of emergency responders at the incident scene, the General Manager LASEMA Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, Managing Director, Mr Damilola Emmanuel, and the DPO Maroko Police Station declared the recovery exercise closed at about 11.30 am, as the dead body had been recovered.

“Suicide is not an option even in the dire economic circumstances.”

Mr Tiamiyu said that the Police will carry out further investigation on the matter.

Furthermore, he reiterated that the situation in the country isn’t enough reason for one to end his own life.

He, therefore, enjoined Lagosians to always endeavour to be their brother’s keeper by reporting any of such incidents on time so as to avoid the repeat of such an ugly incident in the State.
