Two brothers have been reported drowned following a two-hour heavy rainfall in Minna, Niger state yesterday.
The brothers fell into a flooded drainage channel close to their residence in Minna, on their way back from an Islamic ‘Wolimat’ (graduation) ceremony.
Mustapha Kudu, aged 10 years, and Bashir Kudu, 12 years, tripped into the drain while trying to hurry home. An eyewitness said that the boys left in the afternoon to attend the Wolimat before the rain commenced with two of their other brothers.
He also said that their other siblings who witnessed the incident went home to report to their parents following which a search party was raised.
However, before help could reach them, the two boys had been swept off afar and were eventually found dead in a drainage in front of Bahago Plaza, Tunga area of the town.
The father of the children, Mohammed Kudu, who works at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, explained that before leaving for the Wolimat, the four children all prayed with him at 2 pm.
He added that when the two drowned, the other two rushed in to inform the family but nothing could be done to save them, saying, “I have taken what happened to me as an act of God.”
