A stand-up routine by Bill Cosby – who has been accused of being a serial rapist – about drugging women’s drinks with an aphrodisiac called Spanish Fly has been unearthed.
The Village Voice has tracked down the 1969 routine from his album It’s True! It’s True!
In it Cosby discusses Spanish Fly, something “young men first learn about around the age of 13”.
“It always happens when you’re 13, only when you’re 13 on up ’til when you get married. Guys standing around and talking about Spanish Fly.
“You know anything about Spanish Fly?” “No, tell me about it.”
“Well there’s this girl Crazy Mary, you put some in her drink man, she, ‘Haaaaaaaaaaaaah’.
“From then on, any time you see a girl. ‘Wish I had some Spanish fly.’ ”
Cosby then describes his adult interest in such a drug on a trip he took to Spain with Robert Culp of I Spy.
“A childhood dream come true … I said, ‘Hey Bob, you know what I’m going to pick up in Spain?’ He said, ‘Spanish Fly’.”
The renewed attention to a dark chapter for Cosby began last month when a comedian, Hannibal Buress, assailed the veteran entertainer during a stand-up performance in Philadelphia, calling him a “rapist”.
His remarks were captured on video and posted online, gaining wide exposure.
One of Cosby’s accusers, Barbara Bowman, recently levelled allegations of sexual assault against him in interviews and in an online column.
The married mother of two says she has struggled over the years to get people to believe her repeated claims that Cosby, one of America’s favourite television fathers, had sexually assaulted her repeatedly after offering to mentor her and give her acting lessons.
Bowman claims that, in one incident when she was a teenager, she was drugged in Cosby’s New York apartment.
Bowman says she blacked out after drinking one glass of wine, and came to wearing only her underpants and a man’s T-shirt.
Cosby, who has never been criminally charged in any of the cases, settled a civil suit in 2006 with another woman over an alleged incident two years before.
