Bandits launched a deadly attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, early Monday, killing the Vice Principal, injuring the Principal, and kidnapping at least 25 female students, officials have confirmed.
Bandits invade Kebbi school
Armed attackers reportedly scaled the school’s fence around 5 a.m. and began shooting randomly as they advanced through the premises.
The Principal, identified as Makuku, was shot while attempting to shield the students from harm.
Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed the incident, noting that officers responded quickly but could not stop the kidnappers.
“The police tactical units deployed in the school engaged them into a gun duel but the suspected bandits had already abducted them in their hostel,” Abubakar stated.
Government reacts to worsening insecurity
The Kebbi State Government said Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida had been sent to the scene on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently outside the state.
According to Chief Press Secretary Ahmed Idris:
“The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns at any moment from now.”
Community sources said the Vice Principal died on the spot, while the Principal was seriously injured in his attempt to resist the bandits.
“He was shot as he tried to protect his students from being taken by the bandits. It’s a great loss for the community and the school,” a resident said.
Search efforts underway
Security personnel continued combing nearby forests for the missing students as of Monday afternoon.
The state government said more information would be shared after the Deputy Governor’s on-site briefing.
This incident adds to the growing wave of school attacks across northern Nigeria, where mass abductions have become increasingly frequent.
