Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally become a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-driven party he is expected to work with as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
Atiku confirmed the development on Monday via his X account, where he shared a photo of himself displaying his ADC membership card alongside the caption, “It’s official.”
His defection comes months after he quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, amid long-running internal disputes within the party.
Move Strengthens Opposition Coalition
By formally registering with the ADC, Atiku solidifies his alignment with the coalition he publicly backed in July an alliance positioned as a united front for major opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal in their bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
NAIJALOG notes that Atiku, along with other key opposition leaders, had previously delayed official membership registration with the ADC despite earlier commitments.
ADC Leadership Structure
The opposition bloc had earlier presented ADC as its platform for the upcoming elections, unveiling former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary.
