Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a decades-long relationship with the political party he helped build.
In a resignation letter dated July 14 and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Jada Ward 1, Adamawa State, Atiku stated that he could no longer remain in the party due to fundamental differences and a shift away from its original values.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he wrote.
Atiku also expressed appreciation for the opportunities the PDP afforded him, including serving as Vice President for two terms and being its presidential flagbearer in 2019 and 2023.
His exit follows increased speculation about a new opposition alliance. Atiku has been involved in discussions around forming a coalition under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
