The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its two-week warning strike.
The union had embarked on the strike on October 13, 2025, following the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands.
ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension after the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which concluded around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
The strike was initiated over unresolved issues tied to the 2009 Agreement, which include:
- Payment of Withheld Salaries: Three and a half months’ arrears owed to lecturers.
- Promotion Arrears: Outstanding promotion payments spanning over four years.
- Renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement: Calls for improved funding, welfare, and working conditions in universities.
- Revitalization Funding: Increased financial support for upgrading public university infrastructure.
- Release of Third-Party Deductions: Settlement of withheld cooperative and union contributions.
ASUU recently gave the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to address these demands.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also issued a similar ultimatum, urging the government to resolve the crisis affecting tertiary institutions and expressing solidarity with ASUU and other academic unions.
