Arsenal 3, Aston Villa 0
Mesut Ozil answered his critics and lifted Arsenal out of its slump. Arsenal’s $70-million US signing ended an eight-match scoring drought stretching back to last season and also set up Danny Welbeck’s first goal for the club in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Newcastle 2, Hull City 2
Newcastle substitute Papiss Cisse made an instant impact on his return from knee surgery, scoring twice to recover a 2-2 draw against Hull amid fan protests against manager Alan Pardew.
Despite the second-half comeback, Pardew’s side remains without a win five matches into the English Premier League season.
Burnley 0, Sunderland 0
Burnley and Sunderland remained winless in the English Premier League after a scoreless draw.
Burnley had the better of the first half, and Sunderland came alive in the second. But Burnley finished the dull match camping in the Sunderland box for the five minutes of injury time without forcing the issue.
Southampton 1, Swansea City 0
Southampton grabbed a late winner to beat 10-man Swansea, 1-0 as the Welsh club sustained its second straight Premier League loss after starting the season with three wins.
Victor Wanyama scored for the visiting Saints with a right-foot shot into the top left corner in the 80th minute at Liberty Stadium.
West Ham 3, Liverpool 1
Liverpool’s Premier League challenge took another early blow as an impressive West Ham beat last season’s runners-up, 3-1.
West Ham went ahead barely a minute in as Stuart Downing’s free kick was headed back across the goal by James Tomkins, only for defender Winston Reid to nod in from close range. West Ham doubled its lead in the seventh minute on Diafra Sakho’s looping chip.
Liverpool rallied in the 26th when midfielder Raheem Sterling drove the ball past keeper Adrian. But West Ham substitute Morgan Amalfitanomade sure of the points after being set up by Downing to score just before full time.
