A 20-man armed robbery gang, yesterday stormed the rustic town of Ifaki-Ekiti in the Ido/Osi council area of Ekiti state, where they robbed a first generation bank and subsequently engaged the police in a gun battle.
Sources said the bandits arrived the community at about 12:30 p.m. in a convoy made up of four vehicles and immediately headed for the police station in the town where they fired sporadically at the police officers before proceeding to the bank nearby.
At the bank the armed robbers easily overpowered security agents posted to the bank, perforated the wall of the bank with bullets and then carted away an undisclosed amount of money.
However, as they made an attempt to get away with their loot, the police who had obviously regrouped laid seige for them, and engaged them in a gun duel.
At the end of the battle, the robbers were forced to abandon three of their vechicles and flee through the bush.
The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State who confirmed the robbery incident, said that despite the good fight put up by his men, known of the robbers were arrested.
