Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun state, has issued a warning to commercial banks that refuse to accept old naira notes from customers and residents of the state.
According to the Daily Trust, Abiodun has stated that his administration will shut down any commercial bank involved in such activity.
In response to reports that some commercial banks and business owners in the state are refusing to accept old notes as legal tender, Abiodun warned that his government will not tolerate such practices in the state.
The majority of business owners rejected the old naira notes after the Central Bank of Nigeria’s February 10 deadline passed.
Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, this deadline expiration is in effect in some areas.
However, while addressing market men and women at Itoku Kampala market in Abeokuta as part of his re-election campaign, Abiodun, who frowned at the banks’ action, said that because the new naira are not available to residents, the old notes must be accepted to alleviate the people’s challenges.
According to The Punch, the governor also urged residents of Ogun state to remain calm while the government works to bring everything back under control.
