A tragic incident unfolded in Edo State as Police Inspector Jonathan Okouromi allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Abosele Akhere during an operation to apprehend suspected cultists in Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area. The incident occurred around 9 pm on Sunday.
As law enforcement officers sought to arrest a notorious cultist known as ‘Raggae,’ Sergeant Akhere successfully apprehended the suspect. Shockingly, Inspector Okouromi reportedly lifted his gun, fired a shot from behind, and fatally wounded Sergeant Akhere. The injured officer was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
According to a reliable source, Inspector Okouromi fled the scene with his weapon immediately after realizing the consequences of his actions. The arrested cult suspect, ‘Raggae,’ also managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was apprehended.
The police in the Ugbowo division are actively searching for the fleeing Inspector Okouromi, while the deceased sergeant’s body has been deposited at the mortuary. The investigation is ongoing.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor, mentioned being on holiday and promised to provide details upon returning to the office.
This incident follows a similar one in Rivers State last week when Inspector Nelson Abuante committed suicide after mistakenly shooting and killing his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, during an attempt to arrest a suspect.
