Reps have requested that the Tinubu government increase wages for Nigerian workers in response to economic difficulties. The House of Representatives expressed concern about inflation in Nigeria and called for the payment of a “living wage” of N100,000 to Nigerian workers. The lawmakers argued that no worker can survive in Nigeria on a wage of less than N100,000 per month. The House also ordered its committee on labour and employment, finance and national planning to work out modalities for the payment of living wages to Nigerian workers at rates commensurate with economic realities. The motion was co-sponsored by 40 lawmakers, and the deputy minority leader of the House, Aliyu Madaki, led the debate. Madaki argued that rising inflation has made it difficult for the average Nigerian to afford basic necessities. The House maintained that no labourer can live in Nigeria with a wage of less than N100,000 per month, given the current economic reality in the country. Madaki further argued that without immediate and pragmatic steps to improve the income of Nigerians, more Nigerians will go down the economic line.
