The non-payment of the allowances of National Youth Corps members has created much furore since the news broke and increased doubts about the continued relevance of the scheme.
Concerned Nigerians has been urging the National Youth Service Scheme directorate to urgently pay corps members’ their April allowances to save them from hardship.
The Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, had given the assurance that the money would be paid on or before May 18.
But as of 3:00pm today feelers from corp members did not indicate that the status quo had changed. One of our correspondents was just about doing a piece on this when a corper in one of the South-West states confirmed to us that he had just received an alert from his bank indicating that his account had been credited with N19,800 is monthly stipend.
Happy for the corper members, and hope the government will make sure this intolerable act does not repeat itself again.
