The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a fresh strike notice to the Federal Government. This move comes shortly after the recent attacks, abduction, and assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other union members. During a press briefing on Friday, the leaders of NLC and TUC presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government. This includes the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, the Area Commander, and other officials believed to be involved in mistreating and degrading Comrade Ajaero and fellow workers. In the event that the government fails to meet their demands, the labor unions have set November 8 as the new date for a nationwide strike.
It has been reported that individuals suspected to be state agents and security operatives previously attacked Ajaero and other labor leaders, damaging their vehicles, causing injuries, and robbing them of their phones, money, and ATM cards during a protest at the NLC State secretariat. The protest was scheduled to address issues such as unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack on Ajaero has led to widespread outrage and condemnation. Next Tuesday, NLC and TUC leaders will convene to determine the appropriate response to this incident.
