The official death toll from Thursday night’s blast in Nyanya, near Abuja, is 12, while those injured were 19 – bringing the total to 30. But police spokesman, Fran Mba, a chief superintendent of police, said these figures were “provisional”.
Two more security check-points are now in operation between Marraba and Nyanya. All vehicles are now being subjected to stop and search.
Mba told journalists at the scene of the incident that the injured persons were now receiving treatment at the various hospitals in the city.
He also said investigation had already commenced. The report of the investigation into the April 14 blast, which killed 84 persons, had yet to be made public before the latest blast.
Top security officials have visited the scene of the explosion for first-hand assessment, amid unconfirmed reports that another bomb remained undetonated.
The Commander-General of Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Dr Olu Abolurin, the Police DIG Operations, Mike Zoukumor, Commander Guards Brigade and the FCT Director, State Security Service were all at the scene.
There are now conflicting the reports on how the explosion occurred. Initial reports said the devices were hidden inside a Mazda car which was parked by the roadside, but there are now other stories suggesting that it was a Volkswagen golf car which drove from the Keffi end of the road and exploded just about 50 metres away from the scene of the April 14 blast.
