The Governor of Niger state, Mohammed Umar Bago, has declared a public holiday for five days starting from next week Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22. The reason for the public holiday is to distribute palliatives and Ramadan feeding to the public. Governor Bago explained that the palliatives are intended to cushion the effect of the ongoing economic hardship in the country. Civil servants and political office holders have been urged to participate in the distribution and monitoring of the palliatives and Ramadan feeding in their respective local government areas. The Commissioner of Information, Honorable Binta Mamman, has asked the public to cooperate with the officials and to maintain orderliness at all distribution and feeding points for a smooth and successful exercise. Governor Bago had previously declared three days of public holiday in September 2023 for the distribution of palliatives. Additionally, the Governor had approved a wage award of N20,000 for every civil servant in Niger state, in response to President Bola Tinubu’s appeal to state governments to help cushion the economic challenges faced by the people.
