On Monday, December 16, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported a fatal accident on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge near Ilubirin.
The collision involved a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC), resulting in the death of one person and injuries to four others.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, officials led by General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki swiftly arrived at the scene. With the assistance of bystanders, they rescued four victims trapped in the wreckage.
Unfortunately, one individual, trapped in the J5 Ford bus carrying pepper and other perishable goods, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the J5 Ford bus suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, which led to the collision with the Mercedes truck.
Emergency response teams, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police Force, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), worked alongside LASTMA to manage the situation.
The survivors were immediately transported to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for medical attention.
To restore traffic flow, LASTMA’s rescue team efficiently cleared the accident scene, removing the vehicles and spilled goods from the road.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and pledged to continue working with relevant agencies to prevent avoidable accidents on Lagos roads.
