As Christmas 2024 approaches, many Christians in northern Nigeria have expressed growing concerns over potential terror attacks.
According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, December 22, the fear of insecurity has dampened the festive atmosphere for many residents, leading families to reconsider their holiday plans. Many northerners lamented how the region’s persistent security challenges have overshadowed the joy of the season, particularly Christmas celebrations.
Tragic incidents in the lead-up to Christmas have heightened these fears. On Thursday, December 19, a bomb explosion in Bassa, a community in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, claimed one life and left four others injured. Earlier, in Zamfara State, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Maru LGA, resulting in multiple fatalities. The state police identified the attackers as members of the Lakurawa terrorist group.
Northern Nigeria has faced relentless terrorist activities since 2009, with thousands killed and many displaced. Outlaws continue to wreak havoc, further destabilizing the region.
President Bola Tinubu, elected in February 2023, has pledged to attract investment to address the nation’s economic and security challenges. However, the ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for more robust action to restore peace and stability in the region.
