Two female students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo, on Friday lost their lives when a well in their hostel caved in.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the incident occurred at about 7:30 am at Kudirat Hostel of the university, when seven students who were fetching water at the well suddenly found themselves inside as it caved in.
The victims were immediately rescued and rushed to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, where two of the students were certified dead.
One of the survivors, Miss Esther Akhibi, a 200 level student of Political Science, said they had to fetch water from the well because the water taps in the hostels had stopped running for a long time.
She said none of them was able to jump off when the well collapsed, adding that they were rescued by the university’s Red Cross team and some students.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. George Akpede described the incident as tragic and said the hospital was making all necessary efforts to manage the victims.
NAN reports that the university authority was yet to react to the incident, even as other students of the university staged a protest over the incidence, but there was no report of damages to property.
