Detectives from the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID) on Friday raided Victoria Health Centre on Lumumba Avenue to get profile information on a nurse accused of infecting a child with HIV.
The raid followed the arrest of a 65-year-old nurse, who is alleged to have injected herself and used the same needle on a two-year-old baby despite knowing she was HIV positive.
A team led by the Director CIID Grace Akullo interrogated the accused nurse before heading to the health centre for her employment record.
However, the search was futile as administrators of the clinic were not at the clinic.
According to Wandegeya Divisional Police Commander Julius Caesar Tusingwire, the accused nurse was arrested after the baby’s mother raised an alarm and requested for her blood to be tested.
Innocent?
However, the nurse said she acted ignorantly without malice.
“I was very tired and there were so many patients, after piecing myself, I placed the syringe [needle] aside and used cotton to wipe my blood. I don’t know what got over me to pick the same syringe [needle],” she said.
The baby has since been put under Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) treatment. PEP is a medication administered on a person immediately after exposure to HIV to reduce the risk of infection.
