There are many reasons one could get sacked at work, maybe for being too lazy, or being a trouble maker, or even being caught playing bEdminton with the cleaner at the toilet. But, there are many other subtle and unusual reasons one could be fired at work. Reasons like
1. POSTING CRAP ONLINE: We all heard about the Nigerian guy who insulted Michelle Obama on twitter which resulted to him being suspended from work. Posting crap online can cause the company to fire you because as a staff you’re indirectly an ambassador and your activities online reflect on them.
2. DOING OFFICE ROMANCE: OK, so maybe this one is not so innocent, but many people get romantically involved with co-workers and occasionally get carried away during office hours. Unless you’re a Grey’s Anatomy cast member, this is a big-time NO. Many companies have established no-dating policies for staff, clients, and board members, but even for those that don’t, pursuing your passion on the premises could lead to being let go.
3. BEING TOO DIFFERENT: Most firms have a stated or implicit dress code. The way you’re expected to look at a law firm is probably quite different than the way you can dress, say, in a fashion business where you’re expected to dress in the latest style. Matching your look to your position can help you blend in at work and go up the corporate ladder. Sticking out by dressing differently than your coworkers, is more likely to get you kicked out the door.
4. BEING TOO OLD: Many employers fire older employees in the hopes of getting a less expensive replacement. Age discrimination is said to be illegal and many old employees fight back. According to Forbes magazine ‘age discrimination complaints have skyrocketed in recent years’. One way to avoid age discrimination firings at work is to simply know your value. You have the right to age gracefully and not lose your job.
5. BEING TOO DROP DEAD GORGEOUS: Nah, it’s not fair. It also isn’t legal. But whether you’re a man or a woman, you may get fired for being too hot. I’ve seen some situations where an employee was considered a ‘threat’ and terminated due to their looks. You don’t have to be a plain Jane in order to keep your job, but it may help to keep the low necklines, extra high heels, and skin-tight polo shirts in the closet during work hours.
