Periods is something every woman go through every month and it usually last 3 to 5 days but sometimes a woman’s period might last longer than the usual time which might be an indication that something is wrong with one’s body.
Prolonged periods also known as menorrhagia, can be an indication of hormonal imbalance or changes in the uterus, which should not be ignored and it is advisable to consult a gynaecologist if you are the type that always experience prolonged period.
Below are some common causes of a prolonged period.
Dysfunctional bleeding: This is also known as abnormal uterine bleeding and it is caused by the hormonal imbalance in the body. “In most cases, it indicates an anovulatory cycle, a condition in which the ovaries do not produce egg but, there is bleeding from the uterus and it is common seen in a woman of reproductive age mainly 18 years to 35 years”.
Bleeding disorders: This commonly happen to girls of adolescent or puberty stage in which you will have to visit your doctor for proper test as it might be a case of bleeding disorder or lack of iron and vitamins in the body.
Thyroid disease: Pronged bleeding can be as a result of low levels of thyroid hormones in the body.
Uterine fibroids and polyps: “Uterine fibroid can be another causes of prolonged period, fibroid are benign growths of smooth muscles in the uterus, which are not cancerous, on the other hand, uterine polyps are an overgrowth of the cells in the lining of the endometrium, which are usually non-cancerous in nature moreover, chronic inflammation of the cervix, known as cervical erosion, might also lead to prolonged bleeding”.
