The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 32-year-old man, Lanre Ogungbe, who was found lifeless in a hotel room at Soyoye, Abeokuta.
In a statement released on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, it was reported that the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Odutola revealed that a bottle of an alcoholic beverage called “Lakoko” and another bottle of pesticide known as “sniper” were found beside the deceased in the hotel room.
According to the statement, the owner of Authentic Hotel on Soyoye road informed the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa police station about the situation at 3 p.m. on the same day.
The hotel owner explained that the manager raised an alarm after noticing that Lanre Ogungbe, who had come for a brief stay, had not been seen. The receptionist, upon checking, discovered him unresponsive on the bed and notified the manager, who then alerted the hotel owner.
The scene was secured, and the evidence left untouched before the police were notified.
Police detectives responded promptly, finding Ogungbe’s body on the bed with empty bottles of “Lakoko” and “sniper” nearby, which were suspected to have been consumed. No signs of violence were observed on the body.
The remains were taken to the General Hospital in Ijaiye, where Ogungbe was declared dead. His body has been deposited in the morgue for an autopsy.
A thorough investigation into the case is currently underway, Odutola added.
