Less than a day after losing her bid to succeed her late husband in politics, Justina Azuka, candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has been appointed as a legislative aide by Senator Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial Zone.
Azuka was named Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties to the federal lawmaker.
It will be recalled that she contested for the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency seat, once held by her husband, Justice Azuka, before his tragic abduction and murder.
During Sunday’s by-election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APGA candidate, Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, as the winner, with Azuka emerging as runner-up.
According to NAIJALOG, Azuka’s candidacy was supported to help her raise her three children after her husband’s death. Following her defeat, Senator Nwoye swiftly offered her the appointment.
A viral photo showed the senator personally presenting her appointment letter. When contacted, Nwoye confirmed the development.
Reports indicate that the position comes with a monthly salary of ₦200,000, which many have applauded as a compassionate gesture to support Azuka’s family.
Reacting, Anambra native, Mr. Peter Mmeagana, commended the senator:
He said, “What Tony Nwoye has done is the empathy which many politicians in Nigeria lack. The idea of fielding her to replace her husband was the best, but you see how vehemently opposition came after the poor widow. At least with what she has now, she can keep her family.”
