Bishop T.D. Jakes has officially announced his decision to step down as the senior pastor of The Potter’s House, passing the leadership mantle to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts.
The 67-year-old made the heartfelt announcement during an emotional sermon on Sunday, encouraging the congregation to embrace the new leaders warmly. Founded in 1996, The Potter’s House is a prominent nondenominational Christian church based in Dallas.
“This is about legacy,” Jakes shared. “Not because they’re family, but because they’re fit for the role. They’ve been deeply rooted in the spirit and mission of this church for years.”
The transition follows a heart attack Jakes experienced in November and a recent defamation lawsuit he filed after facing false allegations of sexual misconduct. While he is stepping away from pastoral duties, Jakes emphasized that he will continue his involvement in ministry and community efforts.
“I’ve seen too many leaders hold on too long and end up destroying what they built,” he said. “After what happened in November, I realized I can’t risk leaving this church without direction. I have important work to do in the community while I still can.”
He concluded by urging the church to welcome Sarah and Touré as their new pastors, saying, “I recommend that you receive Pastor Sarah and Pastor Touré with open hearts.”
