Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has announced a price hike for its monthly subscription fees in Nigeria, effective immediately for new customers and starting January 27, 2025, for existing users.
In an email sent to subscribers on Friday, the company explained that the price adjustments are necessary to improve its network infrastructure and continue providing high-quality internet services throughout the country.
The new pricing details are as follows: Standard (Residential) N75,000, Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited) N167,000, and Mobile – Global (Global Roam) N717,000.
“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure required to enhance your Starlink experience,” the company stated.
Subscribers who no longer wish to continue with the service were also informed that they have the option to cancel their subscription at any time.
However, the Nigerian Communications Commission initially announced plans to penalize Starlink for the unauthorized increase but later retracted its statement, causing confusion about regulatory approval.
Amid backlash, Starlink temporarily suspended the price hike and offered credits to affected customers while addressing these regulatory challenges.
Starlink began operations in Nigeria in December 2022, marking the first African country to receive the satellite internet service. While it has been praised for providing internet access to remote and underserved areas, the company has faced criticism for its pricing, which many argue is too expensive for the average Nigerian.
This price increase comes at a time when Nigerians are already facing economic difficulties, raising concerns about the affordability and accessibility of Starlink’s services for the broader population.
