Renowned Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has strongly contested the Department of State Services’ (DSS) authority to label his associate, Mallam Tukur Mamu, as a terrorist financier.
The Federal Government recently unveiled a list, compiled by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), detailing entities allegedly involved in terrorism financing, including individuals like Kaduna-based publisher Tukur Mamu. Mamu has been under DSS custody since his arrest in Cairo, Egypt, in September 2022, and faces charges related to supporting terrorists responsible for attacking the Abuja-Kaduna train in March 2022.
At a recent event organized by Daily Trust, Sheik Ahmad Gumi emphasized the importance of allowing the court to decide on Mamu’s case instead of relying on media trials. Despite facing allegations, Mamu maintains his innocence, a stance supported by Sheik Gumi.
Gumi highlighted that Mamu’s case is subject to legal proceedings and cautioned against premature judgments by security agencies. He underscored the principle of innocence until proven guilty and stressed the need for the court to adjudicate the matter impartially.
Addressing speculation linking him to Mamu’s situation, Sheik Gumi clarified his stance, asserting that Mamu’s arrest stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding his involvement in aiding victims of terrorist attacks. Gumi expressed hope for a fair trial for Mamu and urged authorities to adhere to due process.
The cleric condemned unjust detentions and called for Mamu to be brought to trial promptly, advocating for justice and transparency in the legal process. Gumi urged the government to ensure a successful conclusion to the case and emphasized the importance of releasing innocent individuals held in custody.
In essence, Sheik Ahmad Gumi stands by Mallam Tukur Mamu, advocating for a fair legal process and condemning arbitrary arrests and unjust detentions.
