Globalisation and its relative terms like I understand was supposed to be an avenue to bring the necessary change to the world; but it is quite unfortunate they have all turned out to be another semantics without a profound impact of their purpose of invention on human existence.
If globalisation will not solve a problem as simple hunger, though multi-faceted; what then will it solve, algorithm to explore space with limitations?
In a world of over 7 billion populations, hunger has become more devastating than ever with the global statistics being that for every eight persons in the world one of them is starving. An estimate which is by far more palatable than what we have in Africa where one in three persons is hungry; it is no coincidence that our beautiful faces filled with hunger are often used for hunger promotions than any other race across the globe.
Nigerian situation has not been helped by the incessant intra-state conflicts, bad governance, backwardness in technology and our lack of responsiveness to our various challenges. To even add salt on our injury, we hardly get sympathy as much as our hunger stricken counterparts does. Perhaps the reasons are not far-fetched, a nation with enormous resources with billionaires spread across the world unknown to many we are just rich in paper not in how much we are able to feed our nation. A nation blessed in both human and natural resources, with an estimated population of about 175 million (Wikipedia, 2013) people. Three out of five Nigerians battles with hunger one way or the other, whether extreme or partial which one of them is best for human existence?
One of the challenges I have with Nigerian at large is that some of them do not feel the problem of hunger; some of the so-called elites had humble background, now they have enough yet they do not have the courage to help others living below the poverty line. Must we wait to feel the pain to make a change? And the irony of it all is that one way or the other we all face hunger either directly or indirectly, through distance or close relative. In reality we are closer in ties socially than even advance countries that give their citizens palliatives to tackling hunger. The growing demand of people for food is alarming; unemployment keeps soaring at 23 percent, downsizing, inflated prices of goods, political instabilities, neglect of agricultural sector and continuous perpetuation of corrupt leaders.
Only if we are wise we will then realize that the cost of not fighting hunger is more than what it takes to fight this problem. In a hunger filled society; there are more sick population, the human resources are limited, youth restiveness which breads all sorts of militancy as we have experienced in the North and sometimes ago in the Niger Delta region. A smart government will have calculated all of those losses and envisage investing such in the fight to eradicate hunger and empower the people.
Our broader visions are blurred just like the victim that has no food to eat; such person will lose all sense of dignity. He has no trust in himself talk less of the system; our future think-tanks are starved and at tender ages have distorted growth; how do we hope to survive in the next generational timeline. Companies and governments in advance economies are investing in youth so that they can recycle and reduce waste; we are busy recycling obsolete human resources and ideas that have led us to where we are today.
