The World Cup is leaving a legacy beyond the competitiveness of the game. The world governing body of the game, FIFA has launched a programme committed to compensating for CO2 emission in the atmosphere.
The initiative was to reduce the impact of the World Cup on the environment and also raise awareness as to the emission of CO2. Valid ticket holders with authentic FIFA.com Club account and a successful ticket request reference ID are invited to sign up on the FIFA.com’s carbon offsetting page to enter a draw to win two World Cup final tickets. FIFA will also cover the cost to offset their travel emission.
Speaking on the initiative on the FIFA Weekly magazine issued on Friday, the Head of FIFA Corporate Social Responsibility; Federico Addiechi said; “FIFA takes its environmental responsibility very seriously. As part of our strategy with the non-profit carbon management programme BP Target Neutral, we will offset 100 per cent of our own operational emissions and through the campaign.”
With the environmental advocacy not just being supported by FIFA, he added that fans are also enjoined to do same.
He added, “We are encouraging fans to neutralise the carbon emissions resulting from their travel to Brazil. At the same time we use the World Cup as an opportunity to engage with millions of people and raise awareness of the environmental impact of our journeys and the ways to mitigate it.”
