The Nigerian Customs Service’s Comptroller General, Hameed Ali, has revealed that the service has fired over 2000 employees in the last seven years.
Ali, who spoke at a press conference organized by the Presidential Media Team on Thursday in Abuja, said the service despises corruption and has zero tolerance for such officers.
He revealed that, in addition to losing their jobs, those found wanting had been prosecuted and imprisoned.
According to Ali, many of those who were shown the exit were discovered to be shortchanging the Service in its revenue drive, particularly on the duties tax that should accrue to the organization for imported vehicles.
The Customs chief also revealed that some importers who were found to have engaged in shady practices that interfered with the Service’s operations were either suspended or prosecuted.
He stated that he is committed to providing excellent services and hopes that his successor will uphold the standard.
